I am adding to the lore, not answering the question.  My dad told me that it
was common practice in Germany for people local to large radio transmitters
to capture the power.  Sure it's subject to the inverse square law, but a
circuit tuned to the transmitted frequency could probably glean useable
power from a 50,000 watt transmitter up to a few 100 yards away.
