Re: NST Repair

For the white spirit cleaning I would want to fix the transformer in
some
way in a tin can so I could shake the tin to dislodge the softened
asphalt.
Unfortunately what I can not tell you is what temperature the NST got
to or
what temperature you should not exceed to avoid damage to the
transformer.

You might want to try Methyl Ethyl Ketone. (available in large paint
stores). It is the most agressive comercially available solvent that I
know of. It may strip the wire enamle, but I suspect not, as they use
very tough plastic nowadays.

Paint stripper with Methyl Chloride also works quickly on tar. But you
need to get the stuff they sell to professional painters, and you must
stir it ocassionaly. The Methyl Chloride content is very low in the
hardware store stuff. Again it may strip the wire enamle, but I doubt
it. (keep covered as the solvent dissapears quickly into open air)

I had a chemistry prof, tell me that Chlorinated solvents were much
worse biohazards
then industry is willing to admit.
