Think it through - would a piece of foam be structurally sound enough to
wind with wire under tension without compressing?  How would you fasten
the tube to the base and top load?  Sounds terribly fragile!

Don't overlook the obvious solution that everyone else uses - PVC pipe.
There's nothing to be gained by using anything else.  Some may have
suggested that PVC is lossy - but it is not in any significant way.
