Yes, it works both ways... But as I said, I get many fine little arcs on the
top turn of the grid coil with the guard plate in place. If I remove the
guard ring, the arcs start hitting the secondary all the way around.

When the grid coil is connected the other direction, I rarely need the guard
plate. It only seems to arc when the staccato is adjusted to a misfire of
sorts.

I am going to do more testing tonight and tomorrow and will post documented
results.
