This might seem like a stupid question:
If I have a variac rated at 120V, 20A,  can I run it at 240A, 10A,  the

Robert,

Definitely not. You could run a variac rated at 240 volts on 120 volts however. You could gang two of the 120 volt variety together and use them on 240 V, I have done that.
