If you simply try to dissolve the tar away, you'll be waiting for a very
long time and using many gallons of solvent.  You need to melt and drain
the bulk of it the tar, and use a solvent just for cleaning up what
remains.  Paint thinner, kerosene, and gasoline all work well, although
kerosene might be best only because it is less volatile and dangerous to
work with.  I used and recommend an outdoor covered barbeque, with the
NST sitting in a disposable turkey roasting tray.
