If I remember correctly, the air gap prevents the core from saturating by
creating a "high resistance" to the magnetic flux in the core. This limits
the flux density/amp in the core material. Hence as the air gap becomes
wider, the "resistance" increases, the flux decreases and so does the
inductance.
