Smaller ones up to about 5" diameter I do on a lathe. Larger ones
6" - 10"  I've done by hand using machined wooden endcaps with
broomhandle dowel screwed to each end and propped in the
crooks of a couple of chairs with hand rotation. The largest, a 17"
dia skeletal former beast, was wound again with an end extension
clamped in a lathe chuck and the free end extension propped in
something resembling a loose bearing shell mounted on a metal
stand. In all cases the wire was hand-fed.
