To get tube dead soft would require heating to a dull red followed by
a water quench. Heating to a dull red with air cooling is not quite as
good but this also works. You can pre form your tubing by wraping it
between two very stiff sheets of plywood spaced with fender washers
and bolted tightly. The tube should rub slightly against both sheets
of plywood, any excess space will allow the tube to submerge and
spread the plywood. This procedure yeilds perfect spirals, spring back
will ussually give enough spacing, if not the spiral can be opened up
by hand.
