My current TC in progress uses a 1/2" Lexan primary base with 1/4" Lexan 
standoffs.

Use of sharp tools is required, and make sure that table saw blades aren't 
gummed up.  Leave the protective layer of plastic or paper on until all 
machining work is finished - Lexan scuffs *very* easily.  I was able to 
remove minor scuffs with a propane blowtorch with a little practice, but 
major scratches almost require a hydrogen/oxygen flame to remove.

FWIW, a 1/4" spacing betweeh tubes (1/2" center to center) is all that is 
really necessary except perhaps to increase coupling.
