These motors always sync at either true 90 degree (correct) position or 45
degrees off.  Flip the power switch on and off once or twice to let them
coast for 5-8 sec, then back on at 30% variac power and you are in sync.  If
you are not in sync you will know immediately by the length of the spark at
30% setting.

We've used dozens of these in 3-5 kVA coils and they work great using the
above procedure.  Try it and you will see what I mean.  They are easy to
synch with you finger on the on/off switch.
