Hi,
tube is an American nickname for these devices, their complete name is
thermionic valve. The idea being that the device controls the flow of
electrons, much like a valve controls the flow of a gas or liquid. The
source of electrons is the filament, which "boils" off electrons when it is
heated by the current passing through it; this is known as thermionic
emission, i.e. emission of electrons by the heating of a metal. This was
discovered by Thomas Edison while he was experimenting with the electric
lamp. To determine the rate of disintegration of the lamp filament, Edison
placed a small metal sheet inside the glass envelope. The idea was that as
the filament disintegrated it would deposit "soot" on the plate and so a
measure of rate of decomposition could be made. However, Edison found that
a current flowed from the metal plate to ground, he had discovered
thermionic emission and for years it was referred to as the Edison Effect.
It was latter that the thermionic diode was discovered, and finally the
audion was invented, the first triode valve having a filament, cathode,
anode (plate) and a grid to control the flow of electrons. In retrospect,
tube is a generic term for any thermionic device in a glass envelope; a
thermionic diode could hardly be described as a valve, but then it only
allows current to flow one way, so I guess it could be described as a valve.
However a CRT tube has a very different function.

Cheers,

Gavin
