There are 3 issues here, since the conventional auto
alternator has 7 pole faces/side, and to develope
significant power the rpm must be fairly high, you wind
up with an AC frequency of near 500 hz. I think I use
a 1750 rpm motor turninfg a 6 1/2 inch pulley to the
normal pulley size on the alternator The first issue
is the fact that you are not going to get 60 hz out of
these machines in a feasible method, because of the
required rpm to produce significant power.

The 2nd issue is that this higher frequency causes the
ohmic inductive reactances to go higher, so the
current limiting on the NST's outputs is reduced
proportional to the rise in frequency.

The 3rd, probably most important issue is that the
current demand to the tesla primary is effected in the
opposite way, as a capacitive reactance will now pull
more current at the higher frequency,(or I would
suppose depending on the values of capacity being
used...) and not less as is for the transformer case.
This means on one side of the equation your current
supply is being reduced, but on the current demand
side it is being expanded by that same ratio. We might
easily get into the margin where the supply cannot
meet the demand.

I tried running an NST with a step up of voltage near
household values from a single phase of the 480 hz
alternator, and I could not get a tesla gap to fire.
However I could get it to fire from a pole pig that
didnt use a step up of voltage from the alternator,
so the pole pig did the job, even though the predicted
voltages for the firing gap were much lower then the
NST case. So it is the amount of amperage supply that
we obtain on the transformer secondary at the higher
input frequency that becomes a critical factor.
