You can get a much brighter light from one of the new "ultra-bright"
LED's. I've used the big ones from Radio Shack in connection with a
transistor driver to make a baby "Strobotac" with frequency set by a 555
timer. However, just feeding one from a suitable low-voltage (6 volts
or less, you need to worry about reverse voltage breakdown unless you
parallel the thing with a diode which is reverse biased when the "bulb
is list") transformer and suitable series resistor will work just fine.
Most of these LED's have a lens on the end which will give a nice tight
beam of light.
