I assume you realise that the glass is the dielectric,
and the only purpose of the solution is to form the
inside plate. All you really want is a good conductor,
such as a saturated salt water solution. Some folks
have played with various metal salts to try and reduce
or eliminate corrosion of the electrode placed in the
water, but most folks just use good old salt water.
