Dan,

I doubt if the color will cause a problem although you need to make a good 
connection to the globe.  The ones that I have worked with are stainless 
steel with a thin layer of chrome over them.  Some are left this way and 
most are painted.  I have removed the paint by soaking a rag in laquer 
thinner and draping it over the ball for several minutes to soften the 
paint, then wiping it off.  Takes a while and makes a mess but works ok.
