That's why the code requires that you put steel "nail guard" plates over the
front of the studs where the stud has been drilled to pass the romex
through, or that the hole for the romex be far enough away from the "front"
surface of the wall (I can't recall the required spacing but it's probably >
2").  Then, you need to be smart enough not to use 5" spikes when nailing
stuff to the wall.
