Perhaps Noah had more insight into this than any of the list members.

Generally, Tesla coil builders strive for the greatest spark, streamer, or 
arc length.

John Freau has developed a formula based on a number of coils that have 
been optimized to achieve the maximum single-streamer length. This is: 
Streamer length (in inches)  = 1.7 X the square root of the input power 
into the tank circuit.
