Dan,

As long as the heater doesn't leak gas, I wouldn't think it was too big a
deal. I wouldn't allow direct strikes to it. What do others think, is this a
problem?

After all I have often used an empty 5 gallon propane tank as a topload...
( Just Kidding!)
