Does the sphere really need to be copper?  Copper is very soft and will 
dent if you just look at it the wrong way.  Stainless steel "gazing 
spheres" have been discussed on this List recently and are very economical,

.  6" for $15.99, 8" for $23.49, 10" for $31.99.  For a top load, choice of 
material (Cu vs. SS) doesn't matter.

For copper strap, Home Depot sells copper flashing in the roofing dept.  It 
comes in various widths, I think 1 & 2 feet, and is sold by the 
foot.  Depending on how long a piece you need, you may have to cut strips 
and solder together.
