When I switched my coil from an asynch rotary gap to a synchronous rotary, the
performance did not increase either.  The system runs much smoother however
with the new sync gap.  The firing tone is steady and their is no longer wild
fluctuations in the primary current.  I use John's remote phase control system
to control the firing angle on the rotary.  It works very well, I can adjust
from 120 to 240 bps while the coil is running.  I am using a .05 mfd cap
running at about 7 kva.
