Dave,

The aspect ratio was optimized for the largest inductance for a given 
wire length, i.e. minimal resistance for a given inductance.

- Wire center to wire center = wire diameter x 1.43

As Ed pointed out already, the graph has a relatively flat maximum 
and small deviations from the optimum will have no practical 
influence.
