Adam: In the industrial type store there are buffing/rubbing wheels for 
rubbing off seal
and other adhesives. These work good for just turning the wiper by hand and 
it's very good for insulation away from the metal of the Variac since you 
don't look at the transformer while you are energizing the circuit but "feel" 
the carbon brushes....
