Sounds like old-fashioned theatrical dimmers.

Hi Folks,
This is Dan, previously Dan_Gallagher-at-pulsartech-dot-com.

Well anyway, I just found three HUGE donut shaped 11"
diam. coils in the dumpster (30 lbs each). One has a
wiper in the center. One is just the metal donut with
the two windings (inner and outer) and no wiper. The
third is destroyed but I can use the termination plate
on the front of it. 1 to 1 windings and it LOOKS like
they might be HEAVY variacs of the order of at least
30A. On the wiper is a label that says don't move the
wiper, let the motor move it. A guy here said they
look like autotransformers of some sort. I'm also
wondering if the wiper-less one can be used as a
filter coil of some sort.

Is there a way I could post a picture somewhere to get
your opinion on these. I am very interested in your
expert opinion. As you may not know, the variac is
holding me up from moving forward. And if this is what
it appears to be I'm in business and can go on to the
next step in making my TC.

Thank you very much, this is so incredibly exciting. I
JUST got off the phone with the ol' ham guy who was
"supposed" to be looking for a variac for me in his
garage. Then this find in the dumpster. The TC gods
may be on my side. At least you guys are. I am
thankful for that.
