Hard to imagine that motor oil would be cheaper than transformer oil....
Although I will concede that, because of large sale volume, and being a
possible "loss leader", one might find motor oil on sale at less than
$1.25/quart....which is about what real insulating oil costs.

Of course, with insulating oil, you don't have to worry about drying it, or
any of the additives that in motor oil  On the other hand, cheap, cheap
motor oil probably doesn't have much in the way of additives, and heat with
some silica gel will do a fairly good job drying the oil.

Yellow pages, Oil-Jobbers is what you are looking for...
