If you are doing a close-wound coil, then by fixing your length and the
diameter, the number of turns is exactly determined by the wire gauge and
insulation thickness (build). If you are doing a space-wound coil, then the
spacing determines the number of turns. Coils of 400-2000 turns are not
uncommon, but most people aim for 800-1500 as a good compromise for a first
coil.
