Yeah, it seems like it works ok, perfect just to get some arcing going on.
And yes, the C changes with compresion.  I had it tuned without compression
then put the jug of water on top of the stack and had to go in about two
turns.  This is all with a roller inductor in series with the primary coil
to give me enough inductance.  Remember, this is all without a topload, just
the bolt on top for the toroid to attatch to.  I'm gonna go back out in the
garage and use up the rest of the plates I have and maybe try it with the
12/30, should be closer to the right value with this transformer.
