You can, but,.... motor oil has a variety of additives that are good for
motors, but bad for HV in general.  For another thing, dissolved or
suspended water is no big deal in an engine, because it boils out when the
motor gets hot, but is death on HV breakdown strength.

Real HV oil (e.g. Shell Diala AX) runs around $5/gallon in a 5 gallon
bucket.
