    If you are interested in designing a cap that doesn't use glass and
performs well, look at
Friar Tom's Bucket cap.  Its the easiest-to-build amateur plastic cap that
I know of.  It
involves cutting up hdpe buckets and assembling them in a larger bucket in
the form of concentric
plates.  One large cap like this will be good for about .01uf.
