Your right it can be difficult....
but if need be use some sort of bearings on the axel for the spool to spin
on.....you don't want to break the wire...but if you try to do it all by
hand you'll be there forever........what gauge wire are you useing?
it took me 1 hour to wind a 4 foot 10 inch diameter secondary (approx 1200
turns) i think i used 22 gauge wire.....my spool was also about 10
pounds.....just wind it slow as to avoid breaking the wire if it gets stuck
on something.....
