Idea for Powering up coil

I don't have a variac and I don't see myself buying one any time soon. So, I
thought of another way I could apply power to my coil without going full-on
right away.

I have several NSTs, ranging from 9kv - 15kv. I also have several small AC
xfrmrs, from about 20v to 60v. What if I used various combinations of these
to provide a lower power for testing my TC? I could hook the 20v output into
my 9kv NST and get around 1,500v, or I could use my 60v and get about
4,500v.....and so on and so forth.

Short of buying a variac, does this sound reasonable?
