Hi Chris...

as far as a SCR ... a core of that magnitude would require quite a bit of
windings to bring it to saturation,
not to mention the amount of power required to energize the core into a
saturated state.

for example... i tried to make a SCR with a 30KVA 3phase transformer. it
took nearly 70 amps to even get
close to a saturation point ( and even at that power i was still not close
enuf for the SCR to react like it
is supposed to). btw the core area is about 16"^2.
