I'd say that the precautions for resonant operation are mostly
for NST coils and for rotary gaps.  If you use a static gap,
this will limit the voltage if it's set correctly, and MOT's don't
have the tar that shorts out in nst's.  Often with very low 
voltage transformers which happen to be somewhat robust,
it's useful to use resonant operation to get a little more 
voltage.
