pole xfmr safety gap

Hello all!

I have been thinking about my coil lately (which has not really been
officially run yet) and I have a question.
I am running one side of the coil grounded. I would like to know if I need to
put the transformer safety gap AT the xfmr, or if I can just put it at the
incoming line at the coil proper. I'd kind of like to put it on the coil. I
will also have a lightning arrestor mounted to the transformer, but I would
like that to be a backup, rather than shorten the life of the MOVs inside.
Thanks for any info!
