A good ground should be at least 4 to 8 feet deep, I have 2 copper rods 4
feet deep.
800 winds on the secondary, this will work but optimal is 900 to 1200 winds.
1/2 inch I have a forced air gap and mine runs the best at about 1/4-1/2, I
am running 3 15KV 60MA NSTs in parallel.
Try raising the secondary up by small half inch increments, and reduce the
size of the sphere use a small aluminum foil ball at first.
If your toroid is to big you will not get a breakout.
Put a ground rod next to the toroid, about 1 inch away and see if you get an
arc. (Don't hold on to it).
What are you using for your salt water caps?

I had the same problem with my first coil, it was just a matter of tuning,
gap adjustment and toroid adjustment.

You can view my coil and specs at.
