I tried it once a long time ago with a blown static gap. It worked, but not
very well. In that case quenching was _THE_ problem. Using a SRSG with very
close contacts and a large value tank cap might work well. Considering the
peak voltage will be around 3KV, the problem will be getting the contacts
close enough to fire reliably but not hit each other due to thermal
expansion as they heat up. A lot of mass on the contacts combined with some
heat sinking etc to help keep them cool would help. I see short fat
electrodes, may present a problem with dwell.

I tried a single MOT with a full wave doubler circuit once, again with a
static gap. I ended up with a charging choke made from the secondary and
core of another MOT. I stripped out several layers of windings from the
inside to give room for insulation, also a couple of layers from the
outside. I had intended to put the choke under oil, but tried it out in the
open air with the core sitting on a piece of HDPE "just in case". The
charging choke had enough inductance to limit the current adequately,
however the "ringing" blew the diodes in short order. Perhaps the parallel
RL filter that was recently brought to the attention of the list by Dr.
Duncan Cadd could be adapted to this application. It seems to dampen the
transients well in the few simulations I ran, I have yet to see what Terry
came up with, But that is the next thing on my agenda.
