Take a look at these spark pictures, taken from an electrostatic
machine.
The sparks were weakened with the addition of a wood bar in the
discharge
circuit (between the two Leyden jars connected to the machine). The
effect is mentioned in old texts as "colored sparks". They show a bright
segment, or more than one. The positive terminal is at the left side.
