Bill,

The secondaries are insulated with a kind of paper-like wrapping, be careful
if you try to clean 'em up, as the wire gauge is fine and you could break
the connection. I found it best to leave the whole thing steeping in spirits
overnight, then gently brushing off with an old paint brush.
Don't worry about the windings being soaked in spirits - it is a good
insulator!
