Thanks Terry,

I always start the motor with the variac at it's minimum inductance.
It will only start at or near that point.  I mentioned that requirement
in my original posting on the subject, and suggested that folks 
may want to use a timed relay that shorts the variac for starting,
so one does not have to remember to set it to minimum L.
