RWW, all,

I guess the motor inductance mostly determines the capacitor size,
and the variac just needs to have enough inductance? I did all my
tests using the same variac. With my variac, the max voltage is always
found within the first half rotation of the variac knob. Beyond that
(more L), the motor voltage starts dropping off. I suppose that a larger
variac with more L, would cause this voltage drop off to occur earlier
in the knob rotation, and the motor may lose lock at some point.
That's all the work I've done. I'd be interested in hearing of other's
findings on these issues.
