Ben, Yes you can use it if you untwist it, I have a secondary with 24 ga. 
wire from twisted pair communication wire. It must be solid and not a
stranded type conductor. I would think that unless you are scrounging it
would be best to use regular magnet wire as the untwisting is quite a time
consuming/ frustrating job. Then you have to find a good way to spool it up
without kinks or knots so you can store it before winding your secondary.
However if the wire is free and you have the time/ patience go ahead.
