frequency counter/timer chip

I've built a driver around a cheap XR-2206 chip and now wish to include a
cheap frequency/counter chip.  Many years ago I used an Intersil
frequency/counter chip.  Don't know if it's still manufactured or if there
is a better, simpler and cheaper chip.  Any suggestions?
