I saw an auction a while back on E-Bay for what I recall was a neon sign
bombarder. One of the components in the picture appeared just as you
describe. A coil wound on a large bobbin with a huge iron slider running
through the middle. The slider could somehow be adjusted. So it appears that
what you propose is indeed viable and is in fact being used.
