all this works because of polar molecules like water. The H is slightly
positive because the electorns are pushed towards the hydrogen by the
electrons on the oxygen. This also makes the oxygen more negative. When you
feed DC through these you get very little effect on the molecules - they
just move into a new position as electrons surround them. However with AC
they oscillate at 50 or 60Hz depending where you live, and this makes lots
of heat, loss of energy, immensley increased resistance, etc. (that is why
pure water is such a good insulator for pulsed applications - see the
archives about this)
