Something that is extremely useful if you do much surplus scrounging of
transformers is a battery powered 1.2 volt, 60 Hz source (a 555 works just
fine).  That and a DVM lets you make all sorts of useful measurements.
Actually, any voltage works..  Just the "off the cuff" measurements are
easier if you have some nice starting voltage (i.e. 1/100 of the nominal
line voltage).
