I find that a toroid min dia = sec dia. is good ( 6" sec = 6" toroid) the
wide dia ((total = 2/3rds of sec length))
sooo.. if you have a 6"X 24" sec   toroid = 6" X 16" od. X od.

i find that the height of the toroid will determine the performance of the
spark...   if it too close to the secondary ( less than 1/2 the dia of the
secondary) (( if you have 6" secondary and the toriod is at 3" or less
above, you will see more secondary flash-over))  if you place the toroid
about 100% ( 6" secondary = 6" above) performance is better.

seems that you need to tune your coil a bit more (optimal performance for a
12/30 should be about 24- 36" with minimal caps (( salt water/ home mades))
with a MMC or a comercial cap ... 40"

tuning is critical  as i have found out , even .1 turns can make a world of
difference.
