     For zillions of useful parts for building mechanical gizmos of all 
     kinds, including the sort of Mad Science we all know and love, get a 
     catalog from www.smallparts-dot-com.
     
     Among other things they sell oil impregnated bronze bearings which I 
     think would be appropriate for your purposes and come in 1/4" O.D. 
     among other sizes.  Try your local hardware store for bronze bearings 
     too.
