That depends on the primary/secondary arrangement. If it is tightly 
coupled (say 0.6 or so) the clearances will be hopeless. You could 
however get around that problem by giving the secondary (and 
primary for mag type coupling) the usual 4:1 or so aspect ratio and 
then for operation as a two coil, hoist the secondary up out of the 
primary to get the coupling back to a 2 coil level. If the 2 coil topload 
is big enough you could also eliminate having to retune the primary 
when swapping from one system to the other.
