it is an SRSG (was Wire Guage and Q?)

John and Terry,

I just tried the cardboard thing with a piece of electrical tape on it.
Four blurred lines appeared on the cardboard, so apparently it worked! About
the lights turning off when I run the motor: The fluorescent shop light I
have in the garage is plugged into the same outlet that the motor is. When I
turn the motor on, that same fluorescent shop light turns off for a second
because (I assume) the motor takes so much current that the demand
controller for the house takes a second to catch up and put more amperage
into the house wiring.

Unfortunately didn't get to try out the gap tonight. Had to see my older
sister off to Mexico for a college Civil Service trip. Hopefully testing
will commence tomorrow.

Regards,
Nathan
