Two things have worked for me. One, a smaller ROC, (radius of curvature),
toroid. And two, de-tuning, (maybe I should say re-tuning),  the primary tap
point. If I change my primary tap by 1/2 turn my sparks go from one big fat
long blue arc to several shorter streamers that lazily wander around the
toroid.
